Can a UPS Run an Office Laptop?
By PowerLasts Team
An office laptop is one of the easiest things to run on a UPS. Most draw 20 to 60W during normal use, roughly the same as a light bulb. Even a basic 600 VA UPS can keep one running for 2 to 4 hours, and a mid-size unit can cover most of a working day.
A standard 600 VA UPS will run a typical office laptop for 2 to 4 hours. If you also need to power a monitor and router, step up to 1000 to 1500 VA. Laptops also have their own internal battery, so the UPS just needs to stay alive long enough for the laptop to take over.
How Long Will a UPS Last?
Runtimes for a typical laptop drawing 45W (browsing, documents, video calls):
600 VA / ~170 Wh usable: about 2.5 hours1000 VA / ~280 Wh usable: about 4 hours1500 VA / ~420 Wh usable: about 6 hours
Under heavier load (video editing, compiling code) draw rises to 60 to 90W and runtimes drop accordingly. Under light load or with the screen dimmed, you can do better than these figures.
Typical Laptop Power Draw
| Use case | Typical draw |
|---|---|
| Light use (documents, browsing) | 15 to 30W |
| Normal use (video calls, multiple tabs) | 30 to 60W |
| Heavy use (video editing, compiling) | 60 to 90W |
There is no startup surge to worry about. The draw is smooth and predictable, which makes sizing simple.
Runtime by UPS Size
| UPS size | Usable Wh | Light use at 25W | Normal use at 50W | Heavy use at 80W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 600 VA | ~170 Wh | ~400 min | ~200 min | ~125 min |
| 1000 VA | ~280 Wh | ~670 min | ~335 min | ~210 min |
| 1500 VA | ~420 Wh | ~1000 min | ~500 min | ~315 min |
Darker cells mean longer runtime. Usable Wh assumes ~50% depth of discharge on lead-acid batteries.
What Size Do You Need?
For just the laptop: A 600 VA UPS is fine. It gives you several hours of runtime and costs very little.
For laptop + external monitor: Add 30 to 70W for the monitor. A 1000 VA UPS keeps both running for 2 to 3 hours. See How to Size a UPS for Your Home Office for a full desk setup walkthrough.
For laptop + monitor + router: At roughly 100 to 120W combined, a 1000 VA unit gives around 90 minutes; a 1500 VA unit gives 2.5 to 3 hours. That covers most outages for a complete work setup.
The Internal Battery Advantage
Unlike a desktop, a laptop has its own battery. When the UPS runs out, the laptop seamlessly switches to its internal battery and keeps running. In practice, the UPS and the laptop’s battery stack: you get the UPS runtime plus however much charge the laptop had.
For short outages, many laptop users barely notice the UPS is there at all.
What People Miss
Charging wattage vs running wattage. A laptop charger might be rated at 90W or 120W, but the laptop only draws that when charging from empty while under load. During normal use it draws far less. Size against actual draw, not the charger label.
A UPS still switches instantly. Even though a laptop has its own battery, a UPS is still worth it. Without one, a power cut causes a brief interruption that can corrupt files or drop a video call. The UPS keeps everything seamless.
Old UPS batteries fade. A unit that is a few years old may deliver well below its rated capacity. If the UPS is aging, factor that in.

Office Laptop vs Gaming Laptop vs Desktop
An office laptop is the easiest of the three to cover. A gaming laptop draws 2 to 4 times more under load, cutting runtimes significantly — see Can a UPS Run a Gaming Laptop? for those numbers. A desktop gaming rig is harder still; see Can a UPS Run a Gaming PC?
Bottom Line
An office laptop is the easiest load to run on a UPS. A basic 600 VA unit covers most people; step up to 1000 to 1500 VA if you have a monitor and router to cover too. Use the calculator to size your full setup.
