How long a UPS will run depends mainly on the devices connected to its battery-backed outlets. The same UPS might support a light router load for hours but a desktop PC for only a few minutes.

There is no reliable conversion from 600VA, 1000VA or 1500VA to runtime. Measure the load in watts, confirm the UPS can carry it, then read the exact model’s manufacturer runtime curve.

Why VA Cannot Tell You the Runtime

A UPS has three different numbers doing different jobs:

A 1500VA UPS can be rated for 900W, 1000W, 1200W or another watt limit. Its internal battery and power electronics can also differ from another 1500VA model. Lead-acid batteries also deliver less of their nominal energy as discharge current rises. In plain language, doubling the load can cut runtime by much more than half. A straight watt-hours-divided-by-watts calculation misses that behaviour.

The contrast at 600W is especially useful. Published figures range from 2 minutes for the 600W-limited CP1000PFCLCD to 7 minutes for the Eaton and 14.2 minutes for the APC SMC1500C. All three can technically carry 600W, but they do not provide the same shutdown window.

Planning ranges are only starting points. A plug-in power meter gives a better answer. Test normal use and the heaviest realistic workload, then add only the equipment that must remain on.

How to Calculate Your UPS Runtime Properly

1. Choose the battery-backed devices

Separate essential equipment from convenience equipment. A desktop, one monitor and network gear may belong on battery. A laser printer, heater, powered speakers and second display often do not.

2. Measure the combined wall load

Plug the selected equipment into a power meter or a metered power strip. Record the highest sustained watt reading during normal heavy use. For a gaming PC, measure while gaming. For a work desktop, measure during a demanding call, build or render.

3. Add output headroom

The UPS watt rating must exceed the measured peak. APC’s UPS buying guidance recommends choosing an output watt capacity about 20 to 25% above the attached load. That means a measured 600W setup points to at least 750W of UPS output, before runtime is considered.

4. Read the exact runtime curve

Find the model’s runtime graph and locate your watt load. A nearby published point is better evidence than a generic claim such as “up to 30 minutes”. If the manufacturer gives only half-load and full-load figures, treat them as anchors, not as a linear formula.

5. Leave an ageing margin

Published curves normally describe new, fully charged batteries. Runtime drops as sealed lead-acid batteries age. Test the UPS periodically under a controlled load and replace its battery according to condition and manufacturer guidance.

UPS Runtime for a Gaming PC

A gaming PC should normally use its UPS as a shutdown buffer. If the PC and monitor draw 600W at the wall, a 600W UPS is already at its limit and may publish only around two minutes. A 900W or 1000W model clears the load more comfortably, but the exact curve still decides whether you get 7, 10, 14 or another number of minutes.

UPS Runtime for a Home Office

Laptop desks are easier because the laptop’s internal battery continues through the outage. The UPS can prioritise the monitor, router and modem, or it can provide a short bridge while you move the laptop to a longer-duration source.

Desktop desks need both adequate output watts and enough minutes for software shutdown. If you need several hours rather than a short bridge, compare a UPS with a portable power station. Transfer time and automatic shutdown matter for desktops; watt-hours and recharge options matter more for long-duration work.

What People Miss

Surge-only sockets are not battery-backed. Check the labels on the UPS. Equipment plugged into a surge-only outlet turns off when utility power fails.

Full-load support is not comfortable sizing. A UPS rated for 600W may accept a 600W load, yet provide almost no time to react and no margin for a transient peak.

The display is an estimate. Runtime readouts improve after the UPS learns the battery and current load, but low-load readings and ageing batteries can still make them optimistic or unstable.

Automatic shutdown needs setup. Connect the USB or network management link, install the supported software and test the shutdown rule before an outage.

The battery may arrive disconnected. Many UPS models ship this way. Connect it, charge it fully and perform a controlled test before trusting the published runtime.
